MEET MIKE SCOTT

Background & Personal Life

Commissioner Michael “Mike” Scott was born and raised in Orlando, Florida and is a veteran of the United States Air Force. He is the son of Mike Scott Senior of Richmond Heights and Diana Smith of Tangelo Park. He is a father and a member of Experience Christian Center Church.

Community Involvement & Youth Mentorship

Mike works with several local schools and nonprofit organizations to mentor, counsel, and educate children and young adults. He has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America since the age of nine, holding several volunteer leadership roles and earning the Whitney M. Young Leadership Award.

Programs & Partnerships

Mike collaborated with the Public Defender’s Office to develop and implement a mentorship program in their Juvenile Division with great success. For over 18 years, he has partnered with multiple organizations to create personal development and educational programs that serve youth and their families.

Alongside community leaders and correctional employees, he helped create programs for youthful offenders focused on personal development, life skills, GED study strategies, and financial literacy. These programs also include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for teenagers, helping them take accountability and successfully transition back into the community.

Nonprofit & Law Enforcement Collaboration

Mike is actively involved in “Helping All Youth Achieve” (HAYA), a Florida 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving elementary through high school students. He also mentored youth through the Orange County Sheriff’s Office under then-Sheriff Jerry Demings.

This partnership helped create Offering Children Successful Outcomes (OCSO), a mentoring initiative designed to reduce disproportionate minority contact with law enforcement in high-risk schools and communities. The program extends beyond mentorship by involving schools, families, and the broader community through workshops, seminars, and monthly parent sessions.

City of Orlando & My Brother’s Keeper Initiative

In 2019, Mike joined the City of Orlando to coordinate the My Brother’s Keeper Orlando initiative within the Families, Parks, and Recreation Department. This national initiative addresses opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color, aiming to ensure they reach their full potential.

The local program focuses on expanding services for older youth and increasing the number of community volunteer mentors.

Public Service & Leadership

In 2022, Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings appointed Mike to the Citizens Safety Task Force, which was responsible for developing recommendations currently being implemented by local government agencies.

Awards & Recognition

Mike has received numerous local and national awards. He has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to serving his community, particularly by supporting youth and their families.
